About Storyboard · 2.39:1 Cinemascope

Anamorphic 2.39:1 storyboard frames - the modern theatrical-release widescreen ratio. Use these when the storyboard is going to be cut against a real cinematic edit, or when you want a deliberately filmic frame for an architectural fly-through. Further reading: A practitioner reading list covers the standards lineage in more depth.

Standards lineage

Frame aspect matches SMPTE 195 (2.39:1) anamorphic widescreen.

A short history

The 2.39:1 ratio was standardised by the SMPTE in 1970, replacing the slightly older 2.35:1 CinemaScope ratio used since the 1950s.

Where designers reach for it

  • Cinematic architectural fly-throughs
  • Promotional film storyboards
  • Theatre-design sequence boards

Printing this grid

Every variant on this page is delivered as a vector SVG with physical millimetre dimensions baked into the file, so a compliant printer driver will reproduce it at exact 1:1 scale by default. Choose the sheet size that matches your printer tray, set scaling to 100 % (never "fit to page"), and verify with the calibration check on our how-to-print guide. Buyer's guide: Comparing the major architectural scale rulers can help you pick the right physical scale rule to use over the printed grid.
