About Engineering Quad · 1/10"

A North American decimal-inch grid: 1/10" (2.54 mm) cells with every tenth line emphasised to give a clean 1" reference rhythm. The format originated in mechanical engineering offices that worked in decimal inches rather than fractional inches. Further reading: A practitioner reading list covers the standards lineage in more depth.

Standards lineage

Format matches the National Engineering Quad No. 17 specification used by U.S. engineering schools.

A short history

Engineering quad paper was a standard issue in U.S. engineering schools from the 1950s onward; pads of green-printed quad paper remain on the desk of virtually every working civil engineer.

Where designers reach for it

  • Decimal-inch mechanical layouts
  • Lab plots in disciplines that work in inches
  • Survey and earthworks calculations
  • Hand calculations for civil-engineering coursework

Printing this grid

Every variant on this page is delivered as a vector SVG with physical millimetre dimensions baked into the file, so a compliant printer driver will reproduce it at exact 1:1 scale by default. Choose the sheet size that matches your printer tray, set scaling to 100 % (never "fit to page"), and verify with the calibration check on our how-to-print guide. Buyer's guide: Comparing the major architectural scale rulers can help you pick the right physical scale rule to use over the printed grid.
