About Architect Scale · 1:50

A grid pre-calibrated for architectural drawing at 1:50. Each major cell on the sheet measures 20 mm and represents exactly 1 metre on site, with finer subdivisions at 200 mm intervals. Drop a furniture template directly onto the page and trust the proportions. Further reading: A practitioner reading list covers the standards lineage in more depth.

Standards lineage

Scale ratio matches the recommended "preferred scales" list in ISO 5455:1979 for building drawings.

A short history

1:50 became the default European architectural plan scale once metrication settled in the 1970s, replacing the older imperial 1/4" = 1'-0" scale (≈1:48).

Where designers reach for it

  • Residential floor plans and unit plans
  • Interior layouts with furniture placement
  • Fit-out drawings for retail and hospitality
  • School-design studio plans

Printing this grid

Every variant on this page is delivered as a vector SVG with physical millimetre dimensions baked into the file, so a compliant printer driver will reproduce it at exact 1:1 scale by default. Choose the sheet size that matches your printer tray, set scaling to 100 % (never "fit to page"), and verify with the calibration check on our how-to-print guide. Buyer's guide: Comparing the major architectural scale rulers can help you pick the right physical scale rule to use over the printed grid.
