About Hexagonal · 5 mm Flat-Top

A flat-top regular hexagonal grid with 5 mm pitch. Hexagons tessellate the plane with the same symmetry as a triangular lattice but with no shared edges between adjacent cells, which makes them ideal for tabletop game maps and chemistry organic-molecule sketching. Standards lineage

Hexagonal lattice convention used in IUPAC organic chemistry nomenclature.

A short history

Hex paper became fashionable in the 1970s wargaming community after Avalon Hill standardised hex maps for their tabletop campaigns.

Where designers reach for it

  • Tabletop strategy and wargame maps
  • Organic-chemistry skeletal sketches
  • Ceramic and architectural tile patterns
  • Molecular-biology amino-acid diagrams

Printing this grid

Every variant on this page is delivered as a vector SVG with physical millimetre dimensions baked into the file, so a compliant printer driver will reproduce it at exact 1:1 scale by default. Choose the sheet size that matches your printer tray, set scaling to 100 % (never "fit to page"), and verify with the calibration check on our how-to-print guide. Buyer's guide: Comparing the major architectural scale rulers can help you pick the right physical scale rule to use over the printed grid.
